A day to remember

It began like any other day.  After enjoying one of my final days with Mom before she went home to Texas, I picked up the kids from school & they all settled down for snacks and naps.  Within 15 minutes of our arrival home, I heard the most terrified scream ever coming from Gideon.   He came back to my bedroom, screaming  that he'd cut himself.  In my usual unconcerned manner, I got up slowly and nonchalantly told him to go rinse the cut off in the sink while I got him a bandaid.  As I watched him rinse off of his hand, I noticed that the blood didn't seem to wash away.  It just kept coming.  And coming...  And coming.  Then it occured to me that a bandaid was not going to contain all of that blood.  A hint of panic struck me, and as I went back to my medicine closet to search for gauze, I pondered what my next step of action should be.  This didn't seem quite serious enough for me to call 911.  On the other hand, I just couldn't figure out what to do about all the red stuff that seemed to be flowing endlessly out of his thumb.

Adrenaline is a funny thing.  It heightens your heart rate, and makes your mind do all sorts of crazy things.  Some people get panicky& start yelling, and running in aimless circles.  Others get into a zone of clarity, & work super-efficiently.  Me, I freeze. (this was a moment of self discovery for me, as I've never been in such a split second emergency type of situation before).  All I could do, was let my mind wander in circles as to the best course of action:  bandaid?  too much blood.  911?  they would laugh at me.  Call chris?  he's working - and besides, what would he do?  He can't see it to tell me what to do, and it'd take forever before he got here.  By then Gideon will bleed to death.  Maybe I *should* call 911.  WHERE IS THAT GAUZE!?  what on earth am I going to do once i find the gauze?  I wonder if his blood is spurting with his heart beats like it does in the movies?  911?  Call chris?  Call mom?  That's it!  I'll call mom!  She'll know what I should do!

And so I called mom, who was visitng a friend just down the street, and in my calmest voice - choking back tears (because apparently, extreme adrenaline surges make me want to cry), I said, "mom.  I need you.  NOW.  Gideon's cut himself."
Mom: "is that Gideon screaming in the background?  I'll be right over"

While waiting for Mom to arrive, I wrapped the gauze around Gideon's thumb, and asked the other kids how this had happened.  "He was cutting a frozen orange."  what??

Within the few minutes it too mom to get here, the blood had soaked all the way through the bandage.  After a quick examination, she said that I should take Gideon to the local med center.  So i shoved a bunch of toilet paper into his hand to catch any more blood that may be spewing, and we got in the car to drive to the med center.  As we drove, I called chris to tell him to come meet me, and Gideon occaisionally interrupted his nonstop screaming to ask questions about what the doctor was going to do to him and how much it would hurt.   I could tell that he was beginning to go into shock because his speech was getting slurred and he was shivering like crazy.  We parked in front of the office & i carried him to the door.  It was then that i noticed that I hadn't bothered to bring any shoes for him.  Oh well.  Who need shoes in an emergency?  I walked in the door and told the receptionist that my son had cut his finger.  She took one look at the bloody wrappings and sent us straight back to and exam room.

By this time Gideon had stopped screaming and put on his brave face.  The nurse who examined him asked if he would be having pizza and video games that night - and then informed me that it was standard practice for all mothers to pamper their traumatized children with pizza and video games once the ordeal was over.  Good to know.

10 minutes later, the doctor came in.  10 minutes!!  didn't anyone tell him my son was bleeding to death!?  He was very casual about the ordeal.  Took a quick look, and then informed Gideon that he would be giving him a shot to take away the pain.  "It's going to hurt when I give you the shot.  But only for about 5 seconds and then it won't hurt anymore.  I never lie to children.  Only adults."   After the pain was gone, and Gideon had a groggy smile, the doctor took a closer look at the wound.  "Well, the skin is still attached, so that's good."  He looked at me, "If he were to cut off the whole thing, you would need to be sure to bring it in with you, so we could sew it back on."  Mentally noted.  Then he turned to the trainee who had come in with him.  "usually when this happens, they cut through the fingernail, too."  USUALLY?!  how often does this sort of thing happen!?

As the doctor stiched up Gideon's finger, Chris came in to join the fun.  We nervously chatted while Gideon's flesh was mended.  Then it occured to me that this was the first time that Gideon had ever had stiches!  A momentous occasion!  Of course, it needed to be doccumented with photos.  The doctor loved this idea, and covered Gideon's hand in red iodine to help make it look more gruesome.

When everything was done, Gideon decided that he didn't want pizza for dinner.  He wanted pancakes.  So we went home, and I made pancakes for my brave little boy.  And Chris was very kind to take all the kids out shopping with him while I cooked.  This was greatly apreciated by me, because i really needed some time to come down from my adrenaline high & recover from my traumatic experience.  I think it was harder on me than it was on Gideon.

And of course, we had to take one more picture, for Gideon to show off to his friends, while the bandaid conceals his "battle wound."

and another

another quote for today, from Gideon:

"You're the best mom I ever had!!"

I was especially glad to hear that, because I was really concerned with how I was measuring up to all his other moms. ;~)

And the best son award goes to...

Last weekend, I went to Texas to have a reunion with some my high school girlfriends. It was a blast, but i'll tell you all about it later.

Today, I asked Gideon what best part of his weekend was.

His answer:
"Nothing, because you weren't here."

My Crazy Kids

Thought you might enjoy the latest photo of my kids. :)

Congratulations to Gideon!

I love my kids' gymnastics class! Their coach works them hard from the second they walk in to the gym, to the second they leave. he has them doing push ups and chin ups and hand stands and cartwheels and all sorts of stuff. At the end of every class, when they're worn out and exhausted, he has them climb a rope to the top of the gym. We've been going for a couple months now, but neither of the kids could get to the top, to ring the bell. They're always so close, but they quit right before they make it. Every day after gymnastics, i take the kids to get $1 chicken sandwiches at Jack In The Box. So last week, I told Chloe and Gideon that if they rang the bell, they could get **whatever they wanted** at JITB. This never happens, because if it did, i'd be broke. So... they both tried with all their might. Chloe got *so* close, but didn't quite make it. But Gideon, after much struggling, MADE IT TO THE TOP!!! Yay, Gideon!! so we went to JITB and celebrated with a strawberry milkshake, curly fries, and two tacos (which he didn't eat beacause they were too spicy).

Sweet Dreams

A few years ago, before Zachary was born, I had some cute fabric, so i thought it would be fun to make little patchwork pillows for the kids. After several hours of very hard work, i finished them & swore i would never do that again. That's why Zachy & Evelyn have store-bought pillows.

Each of the kids has a blankie that he/she is attached to, that they can't live without....except Gideon. He likes his blankies, but it's his pillow that he loves. --which is nice, since i worked so hard on it. Well, it's been so well loved, that it's become lumpy and stinky, and now had a big irreparable hole:

So I finally broke down last friday, and bought some fabric at the store, to make a new pillow. I thought i'd make it similar to chloe's:

So i cut my pieced & started sewing them together on Saturday. The last time i used my sewing machine was to make those last pillows. It was really funny watching the kids. They all stood around watching this cool new machine. :)
Anyway, Sunday, during the superbowl, I finished! :) Here's the final product:

It was a lot of work, but not as bad as I remembered. and Gideon's ecstatic, which makes it all worth it. :)

the biggest tattletale

Yesterday morning, when the kids & I were praying, Gideon said, "And satan, stop making those people do those bad things, 'else I'm telling God." :)

Don't look at me in that tone of voice

Today, Gideon did something unkind to Zachary, so i reprimanded him. He didn't seem to take it seriously, so i ended my reprimand with good long "i-mean-business" glare. After a few seconds of locking eyes, Gideon says, "Mom, when are you going to stop staring at me?" :~)

A new sister?

The other day, i looked outside to see a little girl with pink hair and ballet clothes playing with Chloe. It took me a minute before I figured out who it was. :)

Gideon Sleeps

The other day, Gideon fell asleep on my bed. When I looked at him, he was laying flat on his back, with his arms crossed over his chest. He looked like a dead person laid out in his coffin. Anyway, i thought it was so funny that I took a picture.

After looking at it on the computer, he didn't seem so funny to me. Instead, i thought he looked like an angel. :)

Gideon is Reading!

One of my biggest fears with homeschooling has been, "What am I going to do with Gideon?" Chloe is soo easy to teach. She sits and listens, and absorbs the information with very little work. Gideon, on the other hand jumps up and down every two seconds, and rolls on the ground when I try to tell him something. It's impossible to get him to listen to me for more than two secconds. I really didn't know if I was up to the challenge of teaching him, and was seriously considering sending the kids to school next year, when he starts kindergarten.
As I prayed about it, though, I felt like God was telling me to keep them home a little longer. More specifically, "I want you to be the one raising your children." Still, I fretted over how this could happen, and whether it was the best choice. Until God convicted me that I wasn't trusting him. After all, if He's calling me to do something, can't He do it? So I gave it up to God. And now I'm trusting him to teach my children, because we both know I can't do it. --And don't you think he'll be a better teacher anyway? :)
Within a couple days of making this decision, I was having Bible time with the kids, and we came to the story of Asa. Asa was a good king who trusted God, and led his people away from idol worship. When he was attacked by a huge army, he sought God's help, and He gave Judah the victory. Some time after that, Asa was facing problems with the king of Israel. And instead of seeking God, he sought the help of men. God sent a prophet to him to reprimand Asa for not trusting Him. He said, "For the eyes of the Lord range throughout the earth to strengthen those whose hearts are fully committed to him." (II Chr. 16:9). The Children's Bible that we were reading simplified that verse it to say, "The Lord shows his power to those who trust him." Lord, I want to see your power, so I'm going to trust you with my children's education.
A couple days later, Gideon asked me to teach him to read. Normally, I might do a simple lesson with him, but not really try, because I just didn't think he had the capacity to learn something so complicated. His attention span just wasn't capable of working through an entire reading lesson. But, I decided to stick with it, and start teaching him. And guess what? He's doing AWESOME! And it's so easy! I don't have to struggle with him at all. I'm amazed at how quickly he can decode the words he reads. Thank you, God, for teaching Gideon for me. :) :)

Some day...

This is my last picture from last Monday. I like it so much that I'm giving it its very own post. This gym is right next to Chloe's ballet studio. The boys have befriended one of the men who works out there, and he lets them come in and hit the punching bags while they wait for Chloe. This day, the man wasn't there. :(

Some day, I'll bring my camera with me & take pictures of the kids boxing. The lighting is great in there & I've always thought I could get some really good pictures.

Zachary likes to go behind these bars and ask, "Mommy, why you put me in jail?"

I don't know why like this one wo much, but I think it's neat.
